Steps in Doing Research

  • Step #1 - Go To Clever.
  • Step #2 -  Start with the Gale U.S. History in Context database.
  • Step #3 -  Use a keyword search to find the event or person you plan to research.
  • Step #4 -  Start with broad overview articles (The "Reference" articles often work best.)
  • Step #5 -  As you read, note important keywords or names of people that might be useful for further searching. Also, use the subject headings  and related article links on the reference article pages to dive deeper into specific aspects of your topic.
  • Step #6 -  If necessary, look into Britannica School database for additional information.
  • Step #7 - Use the Gale Power Search database for very specific searches-- i.e. Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire AND Women's Trade Union League. Use Boolean operators as needed (see the review sheet called "Boolean Searching" under "Additional Resources" below.)
  • Step #8 -  Be sure to copy all MLA citations for text, photographs, and videos as you go along and save them alphabetically in a Works Cited document.
